Deloitte

Audit CTB Intern

June - July 2017 • Dublin, Ireland

What I liked

During my internship I was exposed to many of the facets of the day-to-day life as an auditor in a Big Four firm. In class, we learn about accounting laws and concepts, and at work is when they actually get to apply them. I did my internship outside of the U.S., but accounting is quite universal. The people I worked with were very friendly and helpful and wanted to help me learn as a business professional while also learning to get a grasp of the job.

What I wish was different

I wish it was longer! My internship was six weeks, but I wish it could have been 8-10 weeks instead.

Advice

Go into it with a positive attitude and willingness to learn, and also gain as much information that you can to help you decide if this is what you'd like to do in the future (while building connections with others on the job).

Audit Intern

January - March 2017 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

Everyone at the firm was fantastic to work with. As an intern at Deloitte, you are treated as a full-time employee. Even during busy season, everyone is helpful and takes the time to answer any questions you have. You receive a lot of feedback throughout your internship to help keep you informed on your progress and what you can do differently.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish was different was the opportunity to work more overtime. I felt like there was a lot of work to be done for my engagements, but I wasn't always as busy as I thought I would be.

Advice

Ask questions! Be very engaged and personable from the time you interview to the end of your internship. Ask for feedback and what you could improve upon. However, make sure to find the balance between asking too many questions and staying curious.

Audit Intern

January - March 2017 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Great learning experience, with some of the best auditors in the area! I loved the opportunities I had to apply what I have been learning in class to real-world scenarios. It was an environment that pushed me to learn new things and allowed me the opportunity to see what the "busy season" is like in an audit firm.

What I wish was different

I wish I wouldn't have been so nervous leading up to the internship. Being that Deloitte is one of the "Big Four", I was very nervous about making a good impression; however, the people at Deloitte really made me feel comfortable once I was there, and they were very open about helping and teaching me. I also realized very early in the internship that I could comfortably just be myself and get along great with everyone there. There really was nothing to be nervous about.

Advice

Being proficient in excel will really help you to shine in this internship! Also, don't be afraid to be yourself, and look for every opportunity you can to network and connect with others.

ERS - IT Specialist Intern

May - August 2017 • Panama City, Panama City

What I liked

I loved the work environment and the Deloitte culture. Everyone is very willing to help you and pass on their knowledge. Deloitte promotes work unity and had almost weekly activities for their employees to share together. They also are big in training their employees and giving them courses in important and current topics.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been there longer to learn all the procedures and be able to interview clients alone.

Advice

Be like a sponge, always willing to learn and help. Sometimes the people who already work there are too busy to tell interns or new hires how to do stuff. Stick to them, learn by watching, ask lots of questions. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; that's how you learn.

Tax management consulting intern

July 2012 - November 2014 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I feel that my team gave me an excellent introduction to how various tasks in management consulting work, especially in the realm of technology. I got to work on a wide variety of projects, such as process improvement, enterprise software implementation, custom development, business intelligence/analytics, and business requirement gathering and analysis. Senior members of our team always supported me and encouraged me to seek out opportunities that would enhance my understanding of our group's function and abilities. I was also able to learn a lot through self-directed training and prototyping.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to work on more extensive or complicated business analytics projects. However, many companies did not need the kind of advanced algorithms I had in mind.

Advice

Most importantly, don't be afraid to ask questions! Senior members of your team understand that you're new, and they'd rather have you get a better understanding of a process rather than get confused, make mistakes or invalid assumptions, and not tell them about it.

I loved the people. It sounds cliche but Deloitte really does have some amazing people working at the firm and every team I was a part of was excellent.

Strategy Intern

May - July 2018 • Vienna, Austria

What I liked

I had my own project that I was working on, while I was included in team meetings and had a close relationship to my co-workers, even outside the office. During my project, I got frequent input from the responsible partner and shared a good rapport with him.

What I wish was different

I thought it would have been an interesting experience to enjoy the classical strategy experience, working directly at the clients office, but this way, I got insight into multiple projects and learnt how the organisation better, so both sides have their pro and con.

Advice

I'd say it is important to quickly learn new things and being eager to learn. For me, it was also really helpful to be outgoing and trying to get integrated into the team quickly. Thus, team members were more willing to share their knowledge and lunch breaks were far more enjoyable.

Audit & Assurance Intern

June - August 2018 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

Coming back for my second internship with Deloitte, I really liked going back to Deloitte University because I was able to reconnect, build, and expand my network of students and professionals. I also enjoyed experiencing a two-week rotation in Deloitte's Mergers and Acquisitions Advisory practice. My internship with Deloitte taught me the importance of building your network and technical skills to use as a leverage to be a part of the projects and clients you want to be a part of .

What I wish was different

While I had great experiences in a financial services client and a consumer business client, I wish that I had been able to rotate onto a technology, media, and telecommunications client. The reason I wish this had been different is that I wanted to gain insight on as many of Deloitte's different types of business clients. I believe that knowing early on which industry I want to work on can help me hone in on key skills for that type of client.

Advice

As an intern, if you've never met someone before in the breakroom, social event, professional setting, or anywhere that's related to your internship, introduce yourself and be curious.
