About Montgomery Community Media (MCM):
Montgomery Community Media (MCM) is the only independent, nonprofit media access organization providing hyperlocal news and public information to the residents of Montgomery County, Maryland. Our mission is to engage, educate, and empower through the media. As a community-driven organization, MCM plays a vital role in telling the stories that matter to our diverse and vibrant county.
We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about making an impact through community media and believe in our mission to provide access for all residents.
Position Details:
- Employment Type: Unpaid Internship/Academic credit may be available upon university approval.
- Duration: 8 weeks
- Hours: 12-16 hours per week
- Location: Hybrid – remote work, on-location fieldwork, and may spend some time in our Rockville, Md. office
Internship Overview:
MCM is looking for motivated interns to join our news team for summer 2025. This hands-on opportunity offers real-world experience in a local newsroom environment where you’ll work alongside experienced journalists, producers, and multimedia professionals to inform and serve the Montgomery County community.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in researching and writing community-focused news stories for web, social media, and broadcast platforms
- Pitch and develop story ideas relevant to Montgomery County residents
- Write approved news articles for publication on our platforms
- Cover local events, media briefings, and community stories through field reporting, mobile journalism, or Zoom interviews
- Support producers and reporters with video shoots and scriptwriting
- Learn the fundamentals of news production, field reporting, and public access media
Qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program in journalism, communications, or a related field
- Preferably a sophomore or above at an accredited college or university
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Interest in journalism, public affairs, or multimedia production
- Ability to commit approximately 16 hours per week for the summer term, starting June 2025
- Familiarity with Montgomery County is a plus
- Bilingual abilities are highly valued to help support our local community through translation of articles. Spanish language skills are especially desirable.
Preferred Skills (Not Required):
- Familiarity with video editing tools (e.g. Adobe Premiere, CapCut, Canva, or iMovie)
- Experience writing or publishing for a student paper, blog, or digital publication
- Comfortable using social media for storytelling
- Interest in solutions journalism, social justice reporting, or youth voices
