Email resume and cover letter to jobs1@marshfieldinc.com to apply.
Overview:
Marshfield Associates is looking for a highly-motivated individual to be the junior member of our research team.
Marshfield is a long-only, value investment advisory firm in Washington, DC with approximately $8 billion in assets under management. We hold a highly concentrated portfolio of public equities (approximately 15-20 holdings at a time) and are sector agnostic. Marshfield is a small, collegial firm with a collaborative culture and a unique approach to investing based on fundamental analysis.
The ideal candidate for the Research Associate role is someone who has an interest in equity investing, strong analytical and administrative skills, and intellectual curiosity. Although an interest in finance and investing is preferred, one does not need to plan on having a long-term career in finance to succeed in -- or enjoy -- this role. A number of our team members have non-traditional backgrounds; we encourage liberal arts majors with strong research and analytical skills to apply.
We employ just one Research Associate at a time and this person has significant exposure to senior experienced members of the research team and management of publicly-traded companies. We are looking for a candidate with high executive functioning and well-developed organizational skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; an ability to self-manage, multi-task, and work through a task list, often on short deadlines; and the ability to think creatively and problem solve.
Responsibilities:
The primary tasks of this position include (but are not limited to):
- Providing analytical support to Marshfield’s research team, including preparing and updating financial models for publicly traded companies and conducting in-depth industry research on a wide variety of sectors.
- Providing administrative support to Marshfield’s research team, including scheduling research calls and meetings, circulating relevant documents to support research activities, and editing detailed notes documenting the research team’s conversations with corporate representatives.
- Taking detailed notes on all research meetings, including internal team meetings as well as calls and meetings with investor relations and leadership teams of publicly-traded companies; the notes for calls and meetings with individuals from publicly-traded companies are expected to be akin to transcripts.
- Compiling a daily news summary with critical articles pertaining to Marshfield’s current and potential equity holdings as well as major financial headlines.
- Participating in weekly research team meetings.
- Providing additional support to Marshfield’s trading and operations teams, as needed.
Minimum Education and Skills Required:
- Bachelor’s degree
- High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel
- Ability to touch type, or confidence in ability to learn to touch type at a pace that will facilitate detailed note-taking on calls and in meetings with representatives of publicly-traded companies
- Familiarity with, or confidence in ability to learn how to use, Bloomberg Professional Services, including the Bloomberg Terminal
- High degree of comfort working with numbers and spreadsheets
Other:
