Refugee Support Internship - Summer 2026 - DMV Area

The ECDC ACC DC–Metro is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) resettlement agency authorized by the U.S. Department of State to support refugees from around the world. Our mission is to empower refugees by providing essential support services, including case management, housing assistance, social services, employment support, English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, public benefits enrollment, and more. Through these efforts, we strive to promote self-sufficiency and successful community integration throughout the DMV area. 

We offer unique hands-on internship opportunities across all of our programs available at both of our office locations in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Arlington, Virginia.

The Refugee Support Intern plays an important role in assisting refugees and immigrants throughout the resettlement process, gaining valuable hands-on experience in multiple areas of support. The intern works closely with clients and staff to help address essential needs such as housing, healthcare, education, employment, legal services, and other key resources that support successful community integration. By participating in team meetings, trainings, and workshops, the intern builds a strong understanding of refugee issues and best practices. Under the supervision of the case managers and program leadership, the intern helps coordinate services, connect clients to appropriate community resources, and maintain accurate, confidential client records in compliance with organizational policies and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Support client case management activities under the supervision of the program staff.

• Provide administrative assistance, including organizing and maintaining files, performing data entry and managing documentation.

• Collaborate with team members to plan and coordinate events, including managing logistics, preparing materials, and providing on-site support.

• Assist in the coordination and implementation of surveys or interviews to collect feedback from clients and stakeholders.

• Conduct outreach to develop and maintain relationships with local service providers and community partners.

• Contribute to report preparation by drafting summaries and compiling relevant data.

• Support clients in accessing community resources and social services aligned with their individual needs and goals.

• Participate in team meetings, trainings, and workshops to enhance understanding of program operations and service delivery.

• Assist in the preparation of presentations, reports, and other program deliverables.

• Provide support to cross-functional teams on special projects and initiatives as needed.

• Deliver professional and culturally responsive customer service to clients, partners, and visitors.

• Maintain accurate records, track client progress, and manage inventory using Microsoft and internal databases.

• Submit monthly timesheets in a timely manner.

• Support cultural orientation initiatives to help clients understand local culture, laws, and 

community expectations.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

 

Duration and Participation Requirements

This is an unpaid internship and the time commitment for each program varies; however, interns are required to work a minimum of 20 hours per week in the office. All internship positions require a minimum commitment of three months. This internship program will run from June 2026 through September 2026. These dates are flexible with prior approval and proper communication.

Terms and Requirements

- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work, Human Rights, Criminal Justice, International Development, or a related field.

- Reliable access to transportation, as this is an in-person internship; interns may be required to drive clients or deliver documents. Mileage reimbursement will be provided.

- Access to a personal laptop.

- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

- Ability to perform effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities.

- Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.

- Strong initiative and creativity, with the ability to carry projects through to completion.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

- Experience working in multicultural environments preferred.

- Proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English preferred.

- Legally authorized to work in the United States and successful and timely completion of a background check and a signed confidentiality agreement required.

Although these internships are unpaid, interns will gain valuable experience and skills, including:

  • Exposure to fundamental non-profit operations and organizational environments.
  • Enhanced intercultural communication competency.
  • Increased understanding of marginalized populations, including their challenges and opportunities.
  • Ability to provide sensitive and confidential services.
  • Experience working with populations with limited English proficiency and collaborating with interpreters.
  • Knowledge of local support service networks.
  • Competence in navigating social service systems.
  • Basic proficiency in maintaining case notes, client reporting, and client files in accordance with Federal and State funder standards.
