The Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET's) mission is to develop innovative approaches to protect and restore coastal marine systems and their watersheds, sustainably use resources in ways to benefit human well-being, and to integrate research excellence with education, training and economic development.

Our Aquaculture Research Center (ARC) provides unique capabilities for research on land-based, fully contained aquaculture systems, focusing on improvement of biological waste treatment/conversion technologies and aquaculture system engineering. This research will further enhance water quality and increase waste management efficiency for the complementary goals of environmental sustainability, human health, and economic viability.

The goal of this internship is to expose students to animal husbandry in an aquatic research facility. Our goal as animal care staff is to maintain healthy animals for the research staff. This includes ensuring the aquatic systems are functioning properly and all animal care practices align with IACUC approved protocols. As an intern, you will learn proper animal care practices, how those practices might affect research output, and assist the Aquaculture Research Center staff with daily tasks.

  • Learn how to properly maintain an aquatic recirculating system and daily husbandry tasks including feeding, tank care, and animal health

  • Learn how to maintain a clean work environment in an aquaculture facility

  • Learn how to monitor and maintain water quality in varying aquatic environmental conditions
