Newport News Waterworks is a regional water provider, owned and operated by the City of Newport News, serving more than 410,000 people across Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, York County, and part of James City County. We're hiring a GIS Programmer/Analyst I to design and support the GIS software, maps, and data tools our teams rely on to manage and protect a regional water system. Target Salary Range: $72,000 - $87,000 Based on Experience

What you'll do

  • Develop and maintain GIS software applications — design, code, test, debug, and document
  • Design and build maps, forms, reports, and GIS user interfaces
  • Partner with staff to solve business problems and improve departmental processes
  • Serve as project manager on GIS-related teams
  • Provide GIS technical support and training, supply data for emergency operations, and fulfill data/map requests under partnership agreements and FOIA

What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Cartography, Engineering, or a closely related field, with 1–2 years of related experience in systems analysis and programming — or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Programming experience in one or more of: Java, C#, Python, SQL, or .NET
  • Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS products
  • SQL and an understanding of cartographic principles (datums, spatial references, projections) preferred
  • GIS-field and water-utility experience is a plus, but not required
  • A valid driver's license with an acceptable record
