Research Analyst/Senior Research Analyst (Financial Markets): Monetary and Capital Markets Department at the IMF (Global Markets Analysis Division)

The IMF's Monetary and Capital Markets Department (MCM) has an opening for a Research Analyst/Senior Research Analyst within the Global Markets Analysis Division (GA). 

GA monitors global financial markets and advises IMF member countries and senior management on relevant macro-financial developments. The division conducts in-depth analytical projects that serve as the foundation of the IMF’s flagship Global Financial Stability Report (GFSR) and other IMF research products, including the IMF’s Global Markets Monitor (GMM). In carrying out this work, the division relies on data analytics, investor outreach, and market intelligence to perform these tasks.

The vacancy is for a contractual appointment. The initial contract will be for one or two years and may be renewed for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, subject to performance, budget availability, and business needs.

Research Analyst positions are filled with candidates physically residing in the local Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.

Duties and responsibilities

Working with research analysts, research officers, economists, and financial sector experts, the selected candidate will:

  • Support data gathering, financial and economic analysis, econometric work, and basic programming to deliver high-quality analytical outputs.
  • Compile statistical data, compare and evaluate alternative sources, and ensure consistency of series and definitions.
  • Apply statistical and econometric techniques to data and prepare summary analysis, tables, and charts for reports and other analytical products.
  • Maintain relevant software and write, update, modify, and execute programs for statistical and econometric analysis.
  • Support research projects and GFSR production by processing data, implementing econometric and statistical procedures, developing analytical tools, preparing charts, and interpreting results.
  • Contribute to the coverage of market developments in specific regions in the GMM.
  • Support analytical work featured in senior staff presentations, working papers, and publications produced by the division.
  • Participate in divisional and departmental research projects, draft targeted notes, and, as needed, support missions and engagement with country authorities, academia, and financial institutions.
  • Other projects and tasks as required

Qualifications and requirements

  • An advanced university degree, or equivalent, in economics, finance, mathematics, statistics, data science, or information technology; or a university degree, or equivalent, supplemented by relevant professional experience. 
  • One to two years of relevant experience in financial markets or economic analysis. Experience with database management and automation would be an advantage. Demonstrated interest in financial markets is required. 
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, including functions and formulas.
  • Proficiency in analytical, statistical, and econometric software packages such as Stata, EViews, R, TSP, SPSS, MATLAB, and SAS.

Preferred:

  • Experience with visual presentation tools including PowerPoint, Excel charts, Tableau, Keynote, Prezi, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with database management tools such as Power BI, SQL, MS Access, and IBM Cognos BI.
  • Knowledge of Python, C++, or similar programming tools would be an asset.
