Government Affairs Intern

Overview: The Government Affairs Division for the Comptroller of Maryland is seeking interns to join our team. You will receive firsthand experience in our state capital - working directly with agencies and lawmakers to achieve the goals of the agency.

 

Key responsibilities and areas of focus: You will be an involved member of the Government Affairs, helping achieve the goals of Comptroller Lierman and the entire agency. No two days are the same and, in this role, you will gain firsthand experience in a wide variety of areas. You will be given responsibilities to lead special projects and initiatives under the guidance of the state, intergovernmental, and policy teams. Some areas where you will focus your efforts include:

 

  • Coordinating meetings of stakeholders to generate feedback and legislative ideas
  • Developing background research and talking points for proposed legislation and policy ideas
  • Facilitate the flow of information from our state, local, and federal government partners
  • Drafting remarks and talking points for the Comptroller and other senior staff members
  • Engaging in policy research and drafting summary and position statements
  • Attending meetings with key stakeholders including lawmakers and advocates
  • Briefing senior staff members on initiatives from the Government Affairs office
  • Supporting the Government Affairs Team with selected administrative tasks including managing the testimony submission process and deadlines, drafting briefing documents, coordinating meetings, and assembling required physical materials for the Comptroller and other senior staff.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
• Current college student (2 or 4 year programs) with the legal ability to work in the US
• Able to work a consistent schedule
• Reliable transportation to Annapolis, MD
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• The ability to professionally interact with stakeholders from different backgrounds
• The ability to work under fast deadlines and quick turnaround times

 

Start Date: The start and end dates are flexible and can be worked out on a case-by-case basis. Preference will be given to those that can commit to a consistent schedule.
