Legislative Assistant Job Responsibilities
Fall Internship 2026
A New Policy’s Legislative Assistant Fall Intern performs essential research, administrative and outreach duties. Key responsibilities include conducting policy research, drafting memos, tracking legislation, and attending congressional committee hearings. Additional tasks are assigned based on individual interest areas and the organization’s needs, as determined by current events.
Key Responsibilities:
- Policy Research & Analysis: Conducting in-depth research on policy issues, creating fact sheets and outward-facing materials, and monitoring committee hearings and markups.
- Legislative Support: Drafting summaries of hearings, flagging relevant bills and tracking their progress, and drafting legislative analyses.
- Administrative Tasks: Managing organizational systems and assisting with office logistics.
- Long-term Projects: Assisting with comprehensive initiatives rooted in facilitating long-term change through the development of inter-organizational partnerships and intensive research.

Media Assistance: Preparing media clips, news briefings, and social media content.
Potential Daily Tasks:
- Attend Capitol Hill meetings
- Draft legislative analyses
- Create public-facing materials
- Track hearings, markups, notes, and legislative communications
- Perform research on legislative topics
Internship Schedule Details:
- 10-week internship (September - November 2026)
- Interns report to Robert McDonald in A New Policy’s Washington, D.C. office.
- Hours are typically 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when Congress is in session.
- 8-20 hour work commitment (based on individual's schedule)
- Monday/Friday - remote
- Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday - onsite
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Confidence in triaging between multiple tasks
- Proficiency in policy research and professional writing:
