Education Abroad Peer Mentor
Position Summary: The College of Agriculture & Natural Resources in partnership with Education Abroad seeks an enthusiastic and adaptable student to serve as a peer mentor.
The peer mentor primarily supports outreach efforts to promote study abroad to students in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR). The peer mentor will play a critical role in connecting students to resources that generate excitement about study abroad and assist them with identifying program options and applications. Peer mentors staff EA outreach events (i.e. tabling, class visits) and deliver high-quality presentations focused on helping each audience member follow up on a clear call to action towards study abroad.
This is a part-time position, 8-10 hours per week from late August 2024 - December 2024, with possible extensions for winter break and/or the spring 2025 semester.

Position Responsibilities:

Outreach
- Deliver study abroad presentations to classes, student groups, etc.
- Contribute social media posts to college accounts.
- Follow up with prospective students after outreach events.
- Distribute information about study abroad programs, events and activities through flyering and chalking.
- Staff the EA information tables in AGNR buildings and at events (i.e. orientations, the First Look Fair, Study Abroad Fair, UNIV 100 classes, OMSE Unity Welcome, etc.).

General Advising Support
- Deliver introductory workshops as part of EA’s Study Abroad 101 program to orient AGNR students to the study abroad process and available resources.
- Offer walk-in and satellite peer study abroad advising.
- Answer questions from students, parents and other constituents over email and the phone, directing them to resources such as the Education Abroad website, MyEA, advisors and program materials.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
A successful candidate for this role should: Be someone who can leverage their existing skills and build new ones through training with EA staff; is willing to learn in-depth details about office services, available programming, and existing processes; and use provided information to adopt current office policies and systems.
The ideal applicant should have strong communication and interpersonal skills and be comfortable in completing routine administrative tasks, be resourceful, attentive to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks to complete them in a timely manner.
Required
- Experience in a cross-cultural setting, study abroad and/or interest in global learning
- Ability to communicate key messages in an engaging way
- Availability to staff occasional evening and weekend outreach events as needed
- Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
- Commitment to upholding UMD’s professional standards and complying with policies and procedures
Preferred
- Knowledge or willingness to learn about AGNR college. Do not need to be an AGNR student but should have an interest in learning about the various departments and advising offices
- Creativity and ability to contribute to new ideas for outreach and marketing
- Past experience working or volunteering as an academic peer mentor or peer advisor
- Class standing of sophomore, junior or senior preferred
