Model Development Intern, U.S.

The ICCT is seeking a Model Development Intern based in either our San Francisco, CA, or Washington, DC, offices. This internship provides a unique opportunity to develop quantitative modeling tools that enable cutting-edge research with real-world impact. If you are an undergraduate student, recent college graduate, or graduate student with strong programming and data analysis skills who wants to address two of the world’s most pressing environmental problems––air pollution and climate change—then this is a position you should consider. You will report to a Senior Model Developer in ICCT's Modeling Center.  

 

You Will:  

  • Develop and test Python code for ICCT’s global transportation emissions model 
  • Analyze and incorporate datasets relating to fleet/vehicle characteristics and energy/emissions performance into our models 
  • Update and perform calibration routines to ensure accuracy of model outputs 
  • Contribute to published model documentation 
  • Learn about and contribute to research projects that quantify the potential impacts of transportation policies on pollutant emissions, energy consumption, air quality, health, or societal costs  

 

You Have:  

  • A strong academic record in data science, computer science, engineering, or related field in your current undergrad or graduate program  
  • Interest in vehicle technology, climate change, air quality, energy, environment, public health, or related topics  
  • Superior proficiency in data analysis with Python (pandas, scipy, numpy, matplotlib) 
  • Strong command of common dataframe operations (e.g., group, merge, pivot, melt, filter, fill) 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel 
  • Interpersonal and English communication skills, both written and verbal  
  • Ability to work independently and engage effectively with team members  

 

What Makes You Stand Out: 

  • Experience authoring and documenting complex software (e.g., with multiple scripts, packages, interfaces) 
  • Familiarity with environmental and energy challenges in the transportation sector 
  • Experience working with software version control tools (e.g., Git, GitHub) 
  • Familiarity with PyCharm or other Python IDEs (e.g., VS Code) 
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau) 

 

Our Benefits 

This is a full-time (30- 40 hours per week) internship opportunity that will be based in our Washington, D.C., or San Francisco office for 10-12 weeks and have an hourly rate starting at $23.17 (DC) or $25.49 (SF).  Interns are eligible for a limited benefits package, which includes paid time off, internet subsidy, and other benefits. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
