About the Institute for Medicaid Innovation

Join an organization that is passionate about improving the lives of Medicaid members, their families, and communities through the development, implementation, and diffusion of innovative solutions.  The Institute for Medicaid Innovation (IMI) is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit, nonpartisan research, policy, and community power-building organization that provides independent information and analysis to inform Medicaid policy and improve the health of the nation.  The work of IMI is informed, guided, and supported by an exceptional group of national experts representing academic and non-academic research institutions, advocacy and community organizations, clinician groups, Medicaid managed care organizations, state, and federal policymakers, and, most importantly, individuals, families, and communities.

IMI acknowledges that it is not feasible for us to live up to our mission without acknowledging the need for creating an equitable and inclusive work environment. For more information about IMI, please visit our website

About the Role

The summer intern provides support on Medicaid specific projects related to the mission and strategic priorities of IMI.  Topics may include consumer and stakeholder engagement, women’s health, child and adolescent health, behavioral health, disparities, inequities, structural racism, health system and payment reform, value-based purchasing and alternative payment models, social determinants of health, and other salient Medicaid topics.  Potential candidates are encouraged to review the IMI website to learn more about the organization and current projects.

IMI is seeking up to three (3) summer interns to provide support on projects related to Medicaid managed care, health disparities, equity, social determinants of health, and specific clinical areas of women’s, maternal child, adolescent, and behavioral health.  This position offers an excellent opportunity to be a part of an organization focused on uniting key stakeholders to perform research analyses, develop quality improvement initiatives, and provide education and training that demonstrate the impact of Medicaid managed care on access to quality care for vulnerable populations in the U.S.  The internship will begin in June and continue through August.

Successful candidates will be responsible for supporting the mission of IMI on a variety of tasks, which may include:

  • Developing state Medicaid profiles;
  • Participating in IMI meetings with national Medicaid leaders;
  • Attending national policy briefings;
  • Engaging with leading policymakers and researchers;
  • Conducting informational interviews in areas of personal career interest; and
  • Participating in research projects, quality improvement initiatives, and education/training.

Depending on the intern’s background, interests, and goals, there may be an opportunity to research and draft a fact sheet or to participate in other team projects.  This role will provide an opportunity to learn about the Medicaid program and how it varies across states, and the development and implementation of evidence-based policy.  The successful candidate will be exposed to a dynamic and growing health services research and policy organization.

2025 Project Opportunities

Doula Learning and Action Collaborative

IMI leads a robust portfolio of birth equity and justice projects, including the Doula Learning and Action Collaborative. This is an intensive 3-year effort that will advance birth equity and justice by supporting seven state-based teams working collaboratively to increase access to evidence-based community doula services for families of color who have Medicaid health insurance coverage. Summer interns supporting this project can expect to work closely with the project lead to support the planning and execution of activities to help advance access to doula support for Medicaid enrollees in the seven states across the U.S.

State Policies to Improve Perinatal Health Outcomes

This project explores potential levers and opportunities to address perinatal health outcomes and equity. The information collected in the project informs a range of stakeholders and interested parties influencing policymaking at the national, state, and community levels.

Interns supporting this project can expect to support the upkeep of comprehensive state-by-state dataset covering 23 perinatal health policies accompanied by interactive maps.

National Strategic Medicaid Maternal Health Coalition

The National Strategic Medicaid Maternal Health Coalition brings together policymakers, health care providers, community organizations, and advocates to foster collaboration, leverage collective expertise, and align efforts to advance a shared action plan for transforming Medicaid maternal health services. Interns supporting this project may contribute to the planning and execution of select coalition activities such as monthly sessions, resource development, or workshops.

Medicaid Managed Care Organization Survey

IMI’s Annual Medicaid Managed Care Organization (MCO) Survey is a cornerstone project that provides vital data and insights into Medicaid programs nationwide.  This work directly informs policy and equips stakeholders with actionable insights to address pressing challenges in Medicaid managed care. Interns may have opportunities to support various aspects of the survey, including analysis, survey design, and contributing to the publication of a fact sheet series that highlights key findings.

About You
