China Associate

The Asia Group, LLC is now accepting applications for an Associate covering China issues to join our Washington, D.C. office.

As a member of The Asia Group (“TAG”), you will be part of a fast-paced, innovative team that operates at the forefront of public policy and business across the Asia Pacific. From developing and implementing bespoke market access/expansion campaigns to enhancing political brand equity, you will advance policy-driven solutions to help TAG’s clients capture new growth opportunities throughout the region.

The Associate for China will be an integral member of TAG’s China Practice and will be responsible for supporting all aspects of the firm’s client development and strategy execution on China. A successful candidate will have a strong command of the political, regulatory, business, and macroeconomic environments in China, and be able to distill these trends into actionable insights and strategic recommendations for commercial stakeholders across a broad range of industries. This role requires a strong foundation of China experience, either in the private sector, or working with or within the public sector on trade, investment, and other regulatory issues, and substantial experience conducting strategic geopolitical and commercial advisory for clients is preferred. The role requires domestic and international travel.

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Create and support policy-driven strategies that align with clients’ business objectives in China;
  • Conduct research and draft memoranda for external (client) and internal (TAG) readership relating to political, economic, and industry trends in China;
  • Participate in regular client engagements alongside Partners and Principals of the China Practice;
  • Provide logistical support for clients and TAG leadership related to engagements in Washington, DC, China, or client sites in other domestic or international locations.
  • May from time to time perform other special projects or duties according to the firm's needs.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years of relevant work experience
  • On-the-ground policy work experience in China
  • Familiarity with U.S. trade policy, export controls, and/or CFIUS
  • Familiarity with the U.S. legislative process
  • Knowledge of U.S. and Chinese technology policy
  • Deep understanding of Chinese regulatory frameworks and stakeholders
  • Expertise on China’s intellectual property regimes
  • Fluency in Mandarin (Speaking and Research)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (g., MA, MBA) or equivalent practical experience related to China
  • Outstanding research and writing
  • Proficiency in Mandarin, especially for research purposes utilizing Chinese language reading skills (business proficiency strongly preferred)
  • Familiarity with China’s foreign investment laws, authorities, and regulatory frameworks
  • Experience in government relations or comparable experience demonstrating the ability to integrate public policy with corporate strategy
  • Demonstrated team player and strong communicator

 

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States and are expected to work in-person at the TAG DC office five days per week. TAG provides competitive benefits, including premium health insurance, generous paid time off, 401k matching, and commuter allowances, with regular training opportunities available to its employees. For this role, TAG offers a salary of $68,000-$92,000 with eligibility for a discretionary end-of-year bonus.
